Andy's Choice #1

Gorrilaz – All Alone (feat. Roots Manuva)

I really wanted to include some Gorrilaz as I am a huge fan. This is from their second album, Demon Days, and is doubly as good as it includes big dub/dancehall/grime artist Roots Manuva, (who you can expect to turn up again). I think that the ideas behind the Gorrilaz are great; Albarn is pushing the boat out with collaborations and a disregard for restrictive ideas of “genre” – Albarn has too much respect for music to have a restrictive sense of “that’s not proper”. This music does definitely not get the credit that it deserves due to people writing it off as a gimmicky side-project.

Electric Six – Synthesiser

This is a song with a strong pop melody, which nicely brings together a variety of sounds, albeit with perhaps too much of a produced aftertaste. However, is was one of my favourite tracks from the Electric Six album Fire, so it played a large part in my initial interest in electronic music, with less “big guitar” elements.

Forward Russia! – Nine

These guys are a really interesting band, whose songs were always just given numbers. This is me at the height of my loving of high-intensity math-leaning indie music. Think Test Icicles.

Scroobius Pip – Rat Race

One half of Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, coming before they found one another. For me, this is Scroob’s better poetry, exhibiting less self-importance and focusing more on tangible and nuanced observation than some of his work as part of the duo. Also, the rhythm and breakdown in this piece is much better than a lot of Scroob’s other work.

The Knife – Silent Shout
Yes, you have probably heard it before, but as you didn’t start raving about it immediately, I know that you did not properly listen to it. It combines haunting lyrics and some great soundscaping with a classic trance melody; fast paced and trebly with sounds that are different from any “classic” instrument. Brilliant Swedish Electro-Pop with some darker elements.
