Co-Choices #1 - Andy and Jon

Atoms for Peace – Default

Jon
Atoms for Peace are a super-group (featuring Flea and Nigel Godrich) formed by Thom Yorke to tour his solo album ‘Eraser.’ They had so much fun together playing live they started to write songs together. Default is their first song released as AFP and although it may be too similar to KOL era Radiohead it’s a truly addictive electro song with a fantastic rhythm section.

And So I Watch You From Afar – S is for Salamander

Andy – A Radio 6 gift; Jon and I were sat in the loft and we heard their all-instrumental “BEAUTIFULUNIVERSEMASTERCHAMPION” live sound-check before a recent gig.  Some internet searches later, and both of us love the Math/Prog/Post Rock provided by Belfast’s finest.

Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

Andy – This is a reading of an essay by Mary Schmich that was published in the Chicago Tribune.  The title is “Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young”.  It is narrated by Australian voice actor Lee Parry.  This, coupled with the fact that the original essay was the subject of a controversy (Schmich was falsely alleged to have taken it from a speech by Kurt Vonnegut), makes producer Baz Luhrmann a real collaborative artist.  Somewhat quaint lyrics on a chill-out intrumental backdrop; watch out for the cheesy chorus, though.

Pink Floyd – Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun (Live at Pompeii)

Andy
– One of my favourite bands of all time, Jon knows that since he showed me the Live at Pompeii video, I have been in love with it.  Brilliant Prog-Rock with such a psychedelic edge, they definitely have a sound that no-one can replicate.  I would have picked “Echoes (Parts I and II)” but Jon is already sick of it so he wouldn’t let me.

Tom Waits – What’s He Building?
Jon – Tom Waits is an old favorite of mine but I had never got past ‘Rain Dogs’.  I didn’t I need anything more and I didn’t think Tom had anything more to offer than the rough and eerie bourbon soaked New York style he is famous for. When a friend of mine was describing ‘What’s He Building?’ I was surprised when it turned out to be a Waits song. I shouldn’t have been he is of course a genius with a varied back catalogue which I need to delve into when I have the time.
