Andy – Why am I bringing this clichéd example of previous-level modern rap to your attention? Because, if you forget the subject matter, this track has some of the best rhythm that I have ever heard in a rap track. Krayzie and Layzie Bone both guested on the last verse of Chamillionaire’s all-too-popular track “Ridin’ Dirty”, and that is how I discovered them.
The ideas are stereotypical, the “N-word” is overused and there is a distinct lack of originality, but I think the quality of the word-based beat overrides all of these facts.
Abra Cadaver -

Andy - Hard to define from a genre point
of view, The Hives are the first “proper” band that I saw live. They have elements of punk and post-punk rock
in their sound, but what I really enjoy is their boundless energy and bizarre
irony. This song is about the pain of
working in the office, something that far too many people in this world can appreciate.
Their third album, “Tyrannosaurus Hives”
has many oddly-titled tracks with a somewhat sideways message.
Hail Bop - Django Django

Jon- It’s been a while since a new band has come onto the scene and grabbed my attention with their debut. I find the ‘NME type bands’ incredibly boring these days and although I have respect for today’s straight up indie bands like Two Door Cinema Club and Vaccines I can’t help but feel they’ve missed the boat. Django on the other hand I feel are taking a step forward with what they are doing. It’s cheeky surf inspired guitar music with a masterfully subtle hint of electro which has come at the right time for me as I’m deep into an electro obsession.

Mirror’s Image - The Horrors

Jon - People love slamming ‘the next best thing’ label on bands but usually the hype is too much and disappointment ensues. With The Horrors I feel the very opposite has happened. Their seamless progression from dirty garage rock to 80s synth pop is astounding. However, it’s the album in the middle that I love most - ‘Primary Colours’ has a truly unique sound more like a cavernous landscape to get lost in than a set of songs. They are a talented bunch and though the music press quietly applauded ‘Primary Colours’ I feel it will be looked back upon as a classic. Mirror’s Image the album’s opener shows they mean business.

24 Hour Garage People – Half Man Half Biscuit

Jon - We first heard this song on the radio and although it made us chuckle it didn’t really come into its own until we had an incident almost identical to the one described in the song. The lyrics as the title would suggest are about the attendant of a 24 hour garage. The highlight is a breakdown about sandwiches and is essentially what happened to a friend I was with. I told him about this song and I don’t think he quite believed me until I played it to him.
